"The Calabrian manual known as the Procheiron legum was first edited, in 1895 by the late Professor Brandileone ... from a manuscript, no. 845, in the Vatican library. It is identified with Soverato, a village in the prefecture of Catanzaro, and from the phraseology was obviously prepared for provincial use, probably in the reign of the Emperor Basil II, and subsequently revised in the reign of the Norman king, Roger II. The author, whoever he was, compiled his manual from the two official manuals of the later Roman empire, the Ecloga of Leo III and the Procheiros nomos of Basil I." -- Pref. |
